<div align="left">UGO SCHICK, of the firm of Stoltte</div>
<div align="left">& Schick, architects, L Crosse, Wiscon-</div>
<div align="left">sin, was born in Bidjow, Northern</div>
<div align="left">Austria, January 30, 1855, son of Joseph</div>
<div align="left">and Annie (Letshouer) Schick. Soon after</div>
<div align="left">the birth of Hugo his father, a merchant by</div>
<div align="left">occupation, removed to Vienna and there</div>
<div align="left">carried on his business till about 1880. On</div>
<div align="left">both sides of this family tree we find them</div>
<div align="left">descendants of an old-time ancestry in Aus-</div>
<div align="left">.tria. The house in which Mr. Schick was</div>
<div align="left">born is claimed to have belonged to this</div>
<div align="left">family for over seven generations. As a gen-</div>
<div align="left">eral rule they were people who followed mer-</div>
<div align="left">cantile pursuits.</div>

The subject of our sketch was the sixth</div>
<div align="left">born in a family of four sons and three</div>
<div align="left">daughters, of whom one daughter is deceased.</div>
<div align="left">He grew to manhood in his native land and</div>
<div align="left">there obtained a good education in the pbh'c</div>
<div align="left">schools, subsequently taking a thorough</div>
<div align="left">course of study in the Polytechnical School</div>
<div align="left">and Academy of Arts of Vienna, completing</div>
<div align="left">his studies at about the age of twenty-two,</div>
<div align="left">and graduating in a regular course of archi-</div>
<div align="left">tecture. He spent three years in office work</div>
<div align="left">in Vienna, and in 1880 came to America;</div>
<div align="left">was two years in New York city, two years</div>
<div align="left">in Chicago, and two years at St. Paula coming</div>
<div align="left">to La Crosse in 1886. Here he became aa&</div>
<div align="left">sociated with Mr. Stoltze, and has since been</div>
<div align="left">engaged in a very successful business.</div>
<div align="left">Among their works here may be mentioned</div>
<div align="left">the Chicago, Burlington & Northern Rail-</div>
<div align="left">way depot, Tillman Bros'. Block, schoowl,</div>
<div align="left">churches, City Hall, etc., etc.</div>
<div align="left">Mr. Schick was married in Muscatine,</div>
<div align="left">Iowa, to Miss Mary Kendig, of that city,</div>
<div align="left">daughter of John and Magdalena Kendig,</div>
<div align="left">natives of Pennsylvania and of German an-</div>
<div align="left">cestry. They have two daughters and one</div>
<div align="left">son: Nelly, Jennie and Frederick. The</div>
<div align="left">family worship at the Methodist Church.</div>
